I was rude and took pleasure in being so. I used to be in the government service, but am no longer. I have been going on like that for a long time - twenty years. My liver is bad, well - let it get worse! But still, if I don't consult a doctor it is from spite. In the first book, Sunny overcame this hurdle and made new friends, among them fifteen-year-olds Orlu and Sasha, two boys with very different tempraments, and Chichi, a girl who may or may not be Sunny’s age of thirteen. Sunny has albinism, a trait for which some of the superstitious fear her and to call her “Akata,” an insult that means “Bush animal,” according to some. The books’ protagonist is Sunny Nwazue, an African-American girl born to Nigerian immigrant parents and now living in Nigeria. ![]() Having read and enjoyed the first book in your If-Harry-Potter-was-a-girl-in-Nigeria series of young adult novels, Akata Witch, I’ve been looking forward to the sequel, Akata Warrior. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When I studied the text on an American literature course in university, I’d already read On the Road two or three times, and when people started to say they didn’t like the book for its derogatory depiction of women, admittedly it threw me slightly. The book has become less an exploration of freedom and the American dream and more an exploration of racial slurs and sexism. However, in more recent years its readers, particularly academics, have raised questions regarding the depiction of women in the novel, which seems to have somewhat muddied its image. In 2012 it was adapted into a film of the same title, and it was the book that Kerouac became most famous for, despite an abundance of other published works. ![]() It’s a Penguin Modern Classic-a book that you’ve either read or have heard so much about you feel like you’ve read it. Upon its release in September 1957, it quickly became a handbook for hipsters and vagabonds, particularly the young, and has well-earned its place on post-1945 American Literature courses and bookcases around the world. Kerouac’s On the Road is undoubtedly one of the definitive novels of the Beat generation and the twentieth century-perhaps even of all time. ![]() ![]() ![]() Recommended to anyone looking for picture-books that offer a gentle introduction to the idea of migrant work and workers. ![]() The artwork is beautiful, ably capturing Anna's flights of fancy, whether she is imagining herself and her sisters as kittens, or her family as migrating birds. I was unaware of this community of Mennonites, before picking up the book, and although I didn't learn much more about them specifically - something I have seen criticized - I felt that the story was successful in exploring, not just the emotional costs of this kind of work, but also the feeling of being set apart, when one belongs to a small religious minority. Migrant pairs an emotionally rich but understated narrative from author Maxine Trottier with lovely artwork from illustrator Isabelle Arsenault, poignantly depicting the emotional life of a child of migrant workers. Eventually, at the end of the season, her family migrates again. To understand just how many levels of peripatetic displacement that involves, you have to read this fascinating (mega-award-winning) book backwards. She sometimes feels shy and out of place amongst Canada's English-speaking people - her community speak Low German, or Plautdietsch - but she also enjoys hearing unfamiliar words and tones. Through its presentation of shapeshifting aliens, as well as the use of a plurivocal narrative technique enmeshed with Nigerian folktales and myths, the novel destabilises the notions of stable and fixed identities upon which heteropatriarchy rests. ![]() Lagoon narrates the story of aliens landing in Lagos, Nigeria. In this article, I analyse the ways in which Nnedi Okorafor’s Afrofuturist novel Lagoon (London: Hodder & Stoughton, 2014) challenges stable and so-called normative identities and ways of being. ![]() |
